Update FRI 31. May 2019 (vf): New Setback for Guaido: Bolsonaro will Not Receive his “Ambassador” in Brazil
According to information disseminated by the Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, the president of that nation, Jair Bolsonaro, will not receive the credentials of the representative of the deputy Juan Guaidó in that nation, María Teresa Balandria.
This was recorded in a diplomatic note to which the mentioned media had access. It also says that the decision was taken “by military pressure of the Government”.
The note indicates that by next June 4 it is expected that the president of that nation, will receive in the Planalto Palace the credentials of the ambassadors of Mexico, Colombia, Paraguay, Saudi Arabia, Peru, Guinea and Indonesia.
Belandria was initially summoned to this event and later was excluded.
Wow: Bolsonaro disinvites Guaido’s ambassador to Brasilia from credentialing ceremony next Tuesday.

“The Military High Command evaluated that the participation of the Venezuelan opposition would be an unnecessary provocation for the Government of Nicolás Maduro, after that it was possible to reduce the tension between the two countries,” says Folha.
Likewise, the military took into account what happened after the failed coup attempt on 30 April. “The military evaluates that the uprising led by Guaidó on April 30 was not successful and weakened its position,” the note added. (La IguanaTV - Translated by JRE/EF-OT)

Update THU 30. May 2019 (vf): Humanitarian Aid” for Venezuela to be Distributed in Colombia
The food, medicines, toiletries and other non-perishable products that were stored since February in Cúcuta (Norte de Santander) to be forcibly taken into the Venezuelan border will be distributed among Venezuelan migrants and Colombian populations in need.
This was announced by the National Risk and Disaster Management Unit (UNGRD) of Colombia in a press release on Thursday, May 30.
The UNGRD adds that places with critical food and nutrition needs were identified where the “aid” will be distributed. The Norte de Santander Department is one of the poorest in Colombia, with a rate of 70% in its most underprivileged areas.
Meanwhile, the medicines will be relocated to different points in the region by USAID, which maintains close collaboration with the Colombian authorities.
“Since the announcement of the “forced entry” of “humanitarian aid” to Venezuela, we knew that most of it was going to end up in hands of the Colombian government”, a political expert said to OT. This so called “humanitarian aid” was not approved to enter Venezuela because it was a false flag operation aiming for regime change in Venezuela and did not followed Red Cross protocols.
A few weeks after the “humanitarian aid” incident on February 23rd, several tons of humanitarian aid arrived to Venezuela through the International Red Cross. More shipments are still pending to be received. (Mision Verdad with OT content - Translated by JRE/EF)
Venezuelan Central Bank Releases Economic Data After Three-Year Hiatusa
Inflation and GDP indicators had not been released since 2016.
The Venezuelan government had implemented a comprehensive set of economic reforms last August, which included a monetary reconversion, a devaluation of the exchange rate, and pegging the currency to the Petro cryptocurrency. Nevertheless, the measures failed to deter hyperinflation, forcing the government to raise salaries by devaluing the Bolivar-Petro exchange rate. The latest salary increase took place before May 1, with the minimum wage and food bonus now totaling 65,000 Sovereign Bolivars (BsS), or roughly US $11 at the parallel market rate.

UN expert says "collective persecution" of Julian Assange must end now

Responding to the news of Julian's deteriorating health, Mrs. Assange tweeted that the "UK Gov is unlawfully slowly killing my son!"
"They made him very ill by refusing him ANY access to life sustaining fresh air, exercise, sun/VitD or proper medical care for 6 YEARS of illegal Embassy detention," she tweeted at the United Nations Twitter account. "Then against ALL medical advice threw him into a prison cell."

Mrs. Assange quote tweeted a statement issued by WikiLeaks on Wednesday, asserting that during his seven weeks in Belmarsh prison his health has "continued to deteriorate and he has dramatically lost weight."
The WikiLeaks statement explained that the United Nations has twice found him to have been arbitrarily detained and called on the United Kingdom to honor its commitments under international law and free him. "The UK's refusal to abide by UN rulings, and its subsequent treatment of Mr. Assange since his arrest, presents serious questions about the UK's standing as a human rights-abiding nation," the statement read. "In his last year in the embassy, as the US finalized its extraditions plans, Julian Assange was, at the bequest of US authorities, totally isolated and gagged - a situation designed to make his life as hard as possible."
WikiLeaks also said that they "strongly condemn" the refusal by the Swedish court to postpone a hearing on 3rd June on the basis of Assange's health.
Kristinn Hrafnsson, WikiLeaks' editor-in-chief, wrote that "Julian's case is of major historic significance. It will be remembered as the worst attack on press freedom in our lifetime. The People need to voice their condemnation; it is their politicians, their courts, their police and their prisons that are being abused in order to leave this black stain on history. Please act now to avert this shame".
Assange is currently imprisoned at Belmarsh Prison in the United Kingdom and facing eighteen charges under the Espionage Act in the United States for his publication of the Iraq and Afghan War Logs. If extradited and convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 175 years in prison. Chelsea Manning is currently back in prison for refusing to comply with another grand jury against the publisher.
Julian Assange still has no access to indpendent medical doctors of his choice. Assange's health "had already significantly deteriorated after seven years in the Ecuadorean embassy" in London "under conditions that were incompatible with human rights." BOYCOTT THE SUKUS !!! (Sweden, UK, USA)
For today, an extradition hearing had been scheduled, depite an appeal had been made to postpone the date due to the health situation of Julian Assange. After 243 years the Anglo-Americans can celebrate on 4th of July 2019 that they are again together under oppressive rule - united in crime against humanity.
Protesters in London came out for journalist and publisher Julian Assange who is being held in Britain's Guantanamo, Her Majesty's Prison in Belmarsh, based on the trumped up [this word has now a new meaning] sentence of 50 weeks for skipping bail, but in reality for whistle-blowing.
Assange was too ill on Thursday to appear via video link from a British prison in a hearing on an extradition request from the United States, his lawyer Gareth Peirce told Reuters. He is in a health ward.
So, the hearing had to be adjourned, because the Crown could not present Julian Assange. Due to his health situation they simply were not able to drag him before the court, not even to the video camera in the jail. Is he still alive?
This whole saga is pure madness. It is the end of national security journalism and in the USA it is the death of the first amendment.

Correa received an email saying the account was “disabled for violating Facebook's internal policies,” and that the “account will not be reactivated. This is the final decision on our part.”
Former Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa accused the administration of current President Lenin Moreno and Facebook’s Director for Latin American Politics and Government, Diego Bassante Wednesday of being the main culprits behind the closing of his official Facebook fan page.
“There was never a warning, they never said why they suspended a personal, verified account of an ex-president with 1.5 million followers,” the former president tweeted. On April 12, Correa denounced that the account had been closed, without prior warning or explanation, a day after he publicly criticized Moreno for withdrawing asylum from WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange.
What seems to have tipped-off the former president is at Tuesday's meeting between Facebook’s Bassante, Lenin Moreno and Ecuador’s National Communications Secretary Andres Michelena. Bassante, an Ecuadorean national publicly expressed his dislike of Correa and openly supported right-wing media in Ecuador that sided with political opponents and critics.
After many tries to reactivate his account, on May 21 Correa received an email from Facebook's Client Support Analyst who said that the account was “disabled for violating Facebook's internal policies,” and that the “account will not be reactivated. This is the final decision on our part.”
Regarding the closure of the fan page back in April, CNN contacted Facebook to find out why and received a response without making direct reference to Rafael Correa's account, saying that ”...policies prohibit the disclosure of private personal information, including phone numbers, addresses, banking information.”
This could have to do with Correa’s request for an investigation into a bank account related to the INA Papers corruption scandal that involves Moreno and his family. Like many others, including media outlets, he posted the publicly known account number pertaining said tax haven several times.
“One more step in the brutal persecution, and another show of despair for case INA papers, of which the corrupt [Lenin] Moreno will not be able to escape. Only via this medium will I announce a new page. Do not fall for "fakes," Correa tweeted after confirming the official closure.

Update WED 29. May 2019 (vf): Venezuela Thanks Norway for Mediating Dialogue with Opposition
Venezuela appreciates Norway’s efforts mediating dialogue between the Bolivarian government and its opposition, Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said on Twitter Wednesday.
“After important working days in Oslo, the Government of the Kingdom of Norway reports on progress in the process of political dialogue between the Venezuelan Bolivarian government and Venezuela's opposition. We thank Norway's efforts for peace,” Arreaza wrote.
Attached to his tweet, was the press release published by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs which detailed the progress of the bilateral discussions.
Both "parties have shown their willingness to move forward in the search for an agreed and constitutional solution for the country, which includes political, economic and electoral issues," the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ine Eriksen Søreide, said in a statement.
The press release continued to caution the Venezuelan diplomats to show the utmost care in their comments and statements regarding the process during these early stages.
“Norway reiterates its recognition of the parties’ efforts,” Eriksen Søreide said.
On Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro reassured that the group of state representatives in Oslo, Norway, are discussing "all issues" with the "extremist opposition" in a renewed effort of political dialogue to seek solutions to the country's crisis.
Earlier this month Bolivarian president said he would "never give up" on his defense of the national sovereignty or his efforts to "dialogue with the Venezuelan opposition and to map out a peaceful agenda for the country." Maduro has in recent days proposed bringing forward elections for the National Assembly, originally scheduled for 2020, as a path to resolving the country’s political stand-off. The opposition-held legislature has been in contempt of court since 2016 due to a dispute with the judicial branch.
Meeting between envoys for Venezuela's government, opposition ends with no deal (Reuters)
A mediation meeting between Venezuela’s government and the opposition has ended without an agreement as Norway holds talks aimed at resolving both sides’ long-running conflict, opposition leader Juan Guaido’s office said on Wednesday.
During the meeting in Oslo, Guaido’s office said it had ratified a roadmap of ending Nicolas Maduro’s presidency, installing a transition government, and holding free elections that would “resolve the tragedy that Venezuela is suffering.”
His office gave no details about the disagreement, but Maduro has said previously that he would not step aside. Guaido in January assumed a rival interim presidency and denounces Maduro as illegitimate after he secured re-election last year in a vote widely criticized as rigged.
“This meeting ended without agreement. We have insisted that the mediation will be useful for Venezuela whenever there are elements that allow us to advance in support of a true solution,” the office said in a statement.
Guaido’s office said they were willing to continue in the process with the Norwegian government.
Norway’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday that envoys for Venezuela’s government and opposition had shown “willingness” in a second round of talks.
“The parties have demonstrated their willingness to move forward in the search for an agreed-upon and constitutional solution for the country, which includes political, economic and electoral matters,” Norway’s Foreign Ministry said.
In its statement, Oslo called on both sides to show discretion in public comments so as not to damage the process.
Norway has a long tradition of conflict mediation, but has its work cut out solving the Venezuelan crisis, which has become a geopolitical football as dozens of Western and Latin American nations recognize Guaido, while Russia, Turkey, Cuba, China and others back Maduro.
Economic collapse has driven more than 3 million [disputed figure - more likely 1.8mio] Venezuelans abroad in recent years, while political protests have often turned deadly.
Maduro calls Guaido a U.S.-controlled puppet who is fomenting a coup against him and has said he should face justice. Intelligence agents have detained several Guaido allies and the Supreme Court this month has accused 14 opposition lawmakers of crimes including treason and conspiracy.
The opposition also reiterated its calls to the Venezuelan armed forces to remove Maduro from office.
Speaking to Fox News on Wednesday afternoon, Guaido vowed his supporters would “remain in the streets” until Maduro is ousted. The parliamentary president has, however, come under fire from other opposition figures for participating in the negotiations, with hardline Vente Venezuela party leader Maria Corina Machado penning a public letter to Colombian President Ivan Duque warning that the talks could see the opposition “lose its political momentum.”
The opposition statement was followed by a phone call placed by US Vice President Mike Pence to Guaido on Wednesday afternoon.
“Told him America will continue to stand with Venezuela until freedom is restored!” Pence tweeted, adding that “Nicolas Maduro must go.”
In addition to the Norwegian effort the EU-led ContactGroup on Venezuela will meet again on 03rd June. “The International Contact Group (ICG) welcomes the continuation of the Norwegian facilitated negotiation process between the Venezuelan political actors,” the body said in a joint statement on Sunday.
The ICG held its third meeting in Costa Rica in early May, and the next meeting is scheduled to take place in Lima, Peru, on June 3.

Today is a big global Twitter Hashtag Action Day against the blockade and the unilateral measures imposed by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, against Venezuela.
With the hashtags #TrumpDesbloqueaVenezuela and #TrumpUnblockVenezuela, which have been trending in recent months on social networks, the official twitter account of the campaign @DesbloqueaVE invites you to tweet information, data, figures, reports or truthful reports about the criminal blockade of the United States against Venezuela.
The activity is scheduled to start at 11:00 am, Venezuela time (15h00UTC), and seeks to expose to the world the truth of the country to counter the information matrix that internationally promotes a supposed “humanitarian crisis” without mentioning the unilateral sanctions and the blockade by US imperialism’s responsibility for the difficulties that the country is going through. UNBLOCK VENEZUELA
#Venezuela worldwide campaing against the criminal economic blockade headed by USA goverment against the people of Venezuela, as an instrument of war against the world.
After causing 40,000 deaths, US sanctions on Venezuela now target vital lifeline of cheap food.
Trump has restricted Venezuela’s income by hindering payments within the international financial system, so that the State can not manage the social protection of the population in terms of health and food.
The U.S. comments about sanctions not preventing the acquisition of basic necessities as "an immense lie" concocted by Washington to hide the inhumanity of their blockade.

Venezuela has the highest oil reserve in the world. US government aggression against Venezuela is an attempt to end rising wave of progressive government around the world. On socialism we stand. No to War in Venezuela.
The economic and financial blockade is an act that violates Public International Law and the Charter of the United Nations.
The total losses of the Venezuelan economy caused by the sanctions and the economic blockade imposed criminally by the United States exceed $ 130 billion.
A common US Imperialist tactic is to "make the economy scream." This is what the US is doing to
#Venezuela. It is illegal and immoral. It is deadly. The humanitarian action is to STOP the blockade.
The main target of the blockade are the oil company PDVSA and the Central Bank of Venezuela, key structures for normal and stable operation of Venezuelan, undermining their access to food, medicine and Vedic services.
We are an independent country, and as such we decide our policies internally and we will not allow anyone to get involved in the decisions of our country.
According to a statement from the Treasury Department on 17/04/2019 that institution attacked the Central Bank of Venezuela by banning the US dollar transactions blocking the purchase of medicines.
Among the criminal measures imposed by Donald Trump’s Goverment it is the ilegal confiscation of the Venezuelan gold reserves by the Bank of England and the prohibition of using bank accounts to import medicines.
The special rapporteur of the UN highlights the illegality of the application of coercive measures against the state with the sole purpose of imposing a change of government to provoke the denial of human rights and cause hunger in the population.
The criminal US financial blockade on Venezuela risks the lives of Venezuelan children that received transplants in Argentina thanks to the support of PDVSA. It has been impossible to transfer resources so that they can continue their treatments.

Don't let the British Gold-Thieves Brexit-leave without handing back the Gold that is not theirs (vf)
In 2018, world central banks added 651.5 tons to official gold reserves, as a greater pool of regulators turned to the precious metal as a diversifier, according to data released by the World Gold Council.
However, there are questions whether the gold is still there, where its owners believe it should be.
When German lawmakers flew to the USA to do a physical inspection of Germany's gold reserves stored in the USA, they came back empty-handed, since their request had simply been rejected by the Federal Reserve Bank that serves as the Central Bank of the USA, but in reality is a private holding. Subsequently demands were made to repatriate th German gold to Germany, but only a very small quantity was delivered, with parts of it coming from France and just accounted for in weight - not by gold-bar numbers. So it was some gold but not the gold the Germans had entrusted the USA to store.
In a similar case the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) claims to have 80 tons of the precious metal. Nearly all of the country's gold bars are reportedly stored in a bailment arrangement, in an allocated gold account, at the Bank of England vaults in London.
The Bank of England has kept that reported 80 tons of Australian gold for years. However, the UK regulator has not allowed Australia to carry out a proper audit of its bullion holdings. In an attempt to find out what happened to Australia's gold, insiders an a precious metals analyst stated:
“There have never been any independent physical audits of this gold, which means that there is no way to verify the RBA's claim that it has all the gold it claims to have.”
The latest, partial, audit of Australia's gold holdings was reportedly conducted in 2013, but the results of the checking have never been released neither by the Bank of England nor by the RBA, with a freedom of information request for the findings and the final report denied by both.
“Throughout the last 20 years, the RBA also admits that a lot of its claimed gold holdings have been lent out in the secretive London Gold Lending Market, but there is no information whatsoever available on any of these lending transactions or the bar numbers involved.”
Now, add to this the fact that the Bank of England suddenly "confiscated" the gold of Venezuela's central bank, the Banco Central do Venezuela. Bank of England kidnapped more than $1.320 billion in gold that belons to Venezuela and was entrusted to the bank by th Venezuelan government.
“This is sovereign gold of another nation which was placed into custody storage by a foreign central bank. It is also absolutely extraordinary that the Bank of England has succumbed to US Government and State Department bullying to use,” said an analyst, referring to the refusal by the Bank of England to return Venezuela's gold.
The USA and the UK with some offshoots in Canada are not only the worlds largest gold-diggers in foreign nations and often enough did and do rob Indigenous nations but it appears that they also withhold gold from their rightful owners and are nothing but thieves. This must have immediate consequences on the way anybody can deal with them - or better not.
The Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia ordered Wednesday the release of Seuxis Paucias Hernandez Solarte, known as "Jesus Santrich."
The former leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was arrested for a second time on May 17 for alleged drug trafficking crimes committed after the peace agreement.
The court blamed the Colombian prosecutor's office's incompetence for the error and for overlooking Santrich's congressional immunity. Now it will be this court that investigates it.
"After the decision of the Council of State to ratify the investiture of the congressman, the Supreme Court of Justice ordered the release of Seuxis Paucias Hernandez Solarte, known as 'Jesus Santrich,' because under that condition he is constitutionally under immunity and must be prosecuted criminally by this Corporation."
In today's ruling, the high court said that the ex-leader of the FARC has immunity in spite of not having taken office as a congressman, so "it resolved the reinstatement of Hernandez Solarte's freedom in the face of decisions of officials who had no competence for his apprehension" on May 17 in Bogotá.
With the ruling in the second instance, the court confirms its position that the former commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia Ejercito del Pueblo (FARC-EP) keeps his seat in Congress until his extradition process to the United States is resolved. The Supreme Court’s intervention is the latest plot twist in a non-fiction judicial thriller that has resulted in investigation orders into the prosecution, prison authorities and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) over alleged misconduct.
Santrich was arrested in April last year after US authorities filed an extradition request on claims that the virtually blind FARC leader conspired to traffic drugs.
The US Department of Justice, however, refused to surrender evidence. Audio released by the Prosecutor General’s Office indicated that the FARC leader was deceived by a DEA informant.

Ricardo Molina Alerts on Unacceptable Concession During Norway Talks
Chavista constituent Ricardo Molina said Tuesday May 28 that the process of dialogue between representatives of the national government and spokespersons of the anti-chavismo that are being developed in Norway in a second round this week, should not be used to enable those who have committed crimes against humanity.
During an interview granted to the private television channel Globovision, Molina set as an example the case of the fugitive from justice, Leopoldo López, who was one of the leaders of the failed coup attempt on April 30 and the leader of deadly guarimbas in 2014.
“Leopoldo López caused the death of 47 people and personally I do not believe that we should return him to political power,” said the former minister, recalling his participation in the subversive plan called “La Salida”.
He also expressed confidence that these talks will consolidate the peace of the country, while pointing out that “President Maduro has always used dialogue to maintain peace, otherwise we would be in a civil war.” (La IguanaTV - Translated by JRE/EF-OT)
The European Union on Tuesday named Spanish-Uruguayan former banker and diplomat Enrique Iglesias as its point man to help end the crisis in Venezuela, part of an intensification of diplomatic efforts to seek new elections.
Iglesias, a former Uruguayan foreign minister and a former president of the Inter-American Development Bank, is seen by diplomats as having the contacts and know-how to talk to both Maduro and Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, as well as other political groups.
Having met Maduro and Guaido this month, the EU’s crisis group that includes Britain, France and Germany also hopes to convince the United States to back a peaceful diplomatic process out of the crisis.
The Lima Group regional bloc, which supports the opposition in crisis-hit Venezuela, will meet in Guatemala on June 6, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Tuesday.
Sanctioned TV tycoon was US point man in failed Venezuela coup – report
A TV mogul wanted in the US on money laundering and bribery charges was a mediator between Washington and Caracas officials, offering them sanctions relief in exchange for turning on the government, a new report says.
One of the key figures behind the abortive April 30 uprising intended to oust President Nicolas Maduro in favor of the US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido was Raúl Gorrín, president of the TV network Globovision, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
Gorrín, who fled the USA after he was indicted for money laundering and bribery last November, was acting as a go-between with three senior Venezuelan officials who were seen as key to regime change in Caracas: chief justice of the Supreme Court Maikel Moreno, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, and military counter-intelligence chief General Ivan Hernández.
US national security adviser John Bolton brought up their names on the day of the uprising, but they ended up standing by Maduro – and the day was lost when Guaido’s followers sought asylum in various embassies around Caracas.
Citing the Venezuelan publication Armando Info, the WSJ said that Gorrin was offering the prospect of the US removing sanctions against Venezuelan officials if they switched their support to Guaido. As an argument, he would bring up the lifting of sanctions against his wife, Maria Alexandra Perdomo.
Both Gorrin and Pedromo were put on the US blacklist in January, but in March the US Treasury removed Pedromo’s name from the sanctions register, without an explanation.
In August 2018, Gorrin had been indicted by US officials in Florida for money laundering and bribery; the charges were made public in November. While the WSJ could not get an official confirmation on the story, or a response from Gorrin or anyone in Caracas, the controversial US special envoy for Venezuela Elliott Abrams confirmed that Washington has been using sanctions in an effort to influence government officials to defect.
"We have been messaging people in the regime publicly and repeatedly that we are absolutely willing to remove sanctions on any individual who assists in restoring democracy to Venezuela," Abrams said.
Despite the repeated failures by Guaido and his supporters to overthrow the government, officials in the Trump administration continue to believe that the sanctions are a powerful leverage that has “succeeded in tempting” officials loyal to Maduro to “engage” with the US-backed opposition, and intend to continue using them to that effect.
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz: Another Politician Demanding Maduro’s Resignation and Leaving Office Before Maduro
The Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, who has just been dismissed for corruption offenses, was noted on the list of leaders who have left power early, after having requested the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to step down.
In February, Kurz said on Twitter that he had spoken by telephone with the “president in charge of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó”, to whom he offered support and promised that Austria would join the countries that recognize him as head of state, if Maduro did not call for early presidential elections promptly.
“I just had a very good telephone conversation with President Juan Guaidó. He has all our support to restore democracy in Venezuela,” wrote the right-wing politician. “Venezuelans have suffered too much time due to mismanagement and disregard for the rule of law by the Maduro regime.”
In May, Kurz issued another statement criticizing the Maduro government for the arrest of several deputies who participated openly in the coup attempt on April 30.
His early departure does not mean that Austria is going to change its position with respect to Venezuela, because it is one of the nations of Europe where the right-wing forces are flourishing with intensity. However, Kurz has experienced precociously (he is just 32 years old) the karmic effects of interference in other nations’ affairs.
Among the heads of government who have said that “Maduro must leave” and then have been turned out of their positions early include the Spanish Mariano Rajoy, the Peruvian Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, the British Theresa May and, now, the Austrian Chancellor. (La IguanaTV - Translated by JRE/EF-OT)

US boycotts arms control conference in protest at Venezuela
The United States walked out of a UN disarmament forum in protest after Venezuela took up the conference’s rotating chairmanship, insisting it would not participate in a conference led by a “rogue state.”
“Whatever is discussed in there, whatever is decided, has absolutely no legitimacy because it is an illegitimate regime presiding over that body,” US ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament (CD) Robert Wood told reporters Tuesday after he stormed out of the meeting.
Wood ditched the forum as soon as his Venezuelan counterpart Jorge Valero was granted the conference’s presidency – which rotates on a monthly basis – calling Valero’s acceptance speech a “diatribe of propaganda.”
The US and its allies in the Lima Group – comprised of more than a dozen Latin American allies including Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and Chile – will boycott the CD for the next four weeks, until the new chair takes over, Wood said in a statement after the meeting.
Washington, along with a handful of allies, supports Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who declared himself ‘interim president’ in January, with US recognition. The pro-Guaido bloc considers Venezuela’s elected president, Nicolas Maduro, to be illegitimate.
Wood demanded the CD chairmanship be granted to a member of the opposition.
“A representative of Juan Guaido, the interim president, should be in this body, should be sitting in that chair right now,” he said, adding that the Maduro government “is in essence dead, it just doesn’t want to lay down.”
US President Donald Trump has ramped up sanctions on Venezuela in recent months, crippling energy exports of a country already in dire straights and depriving the socialist government of much needed revenue. Washington considers sanctions part of another “maximum pressure campaign,” designed to coerce the Maduro government into compliance.
The US endorsed an opposition coup attempt in late April, but the uprising failed to inspire mass defections from the security forces and fizzled out within days, leaving Washington and the Guaido faction frustrated.
Ambassador Wood staged a walkout at last year’s CD as well, in that case over Syria’s elevation to the chair position. Wood worked off a similar script then, ditching the meeting as the Syrian ambassador began his address and complaining to reporters outside the chamber.
Venezuelan envoy lashes back after U.S. walkout from UN body
Venezuela’s ambassador in Geneva mocked as “ridiculous” a U.S. walkout Tuesday from his chairmanship of the U.N.’s main disarmament body, launching barbs at President Donald Trump and laughing as he claimed a David-over-Goliath diplomatic victory over the United States.
Jorge Valero was reacting to the walkout by Washington’s ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament, Robert Wood, which was the latest choreographed U.S. move to try to pressure Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s government.
Valero lambasted Trump as a “war-mongering racist” and said the U.S. president destained multilateralism.
The Venezuelan envoy insisted that only Wood walked out on Tuesday and claimed a diplomatic victory for Maduro’s government.
“The representative of the Donald Trump government remained isolated,” Valero told reporters. “What he did was ridiculous.”
“It’s a paradox that a nuclear power ... was defeated today by a small country such as Venezuela,” Valero added. “In summary, today David beat Goliath.”
UN Recognizes Venezuela Among Top Nations for Right to Housing
The United Nations has recognized Venezuela as one of the top countries for guaranteeing people’s right to housing at the first UN-Habitat Assembly taking place in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi.
Venezuela’s Minister for Habitat and Housing Ildemaro Villarroel announced the statement Tuesday via his Twitter account. UN-Habitat is the U.N.'s highest decision-making body on the subject of sustainable urban development and housing.
During the first day's sessions of the assembly, which runs from May 27 until May 31, the Venezuelan government made a presentation on the scope of its social program since it was first conceived.
The Venezuelan official also used the social media platform to call attention to a meeting he held with the director of UN-Habitat Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
"In it, we talked about the achievements of the Great Housing Project Venezuela (GMVV) and the challenges to sustaining this socialist mission," Villarroel said.
This event brings together 193 United Nations members, and the achievement of Venezuela’s social program will be showcased to for all to see.
"The GMVV continues to be an example to the world that housing in Venezuela is a social right, rather than a commodity," said the Venezuelan minister.
The Venezuelan official explained through Twitter that the Venezuelan delegation held meetings with representations from various countries.
"From Kenya at UN-Habitat, we are having a bilateral meeting with the Republic of Serbia. The Bolivarian government is strengthening cooperative relationships and displaying the GMVV model for the whole world to see."
In another tweet, he highlighted the meeting with the Minister of Housing and Urban Planning of the Algerian Republic. "We are sharing successful experiences in housing construction, and we are coordinating technical visits to both countries to learn about each other's strengths in the area," he said.
To date, the GMVV has fulfilled one of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Since 2011, the government of Venezuela has granted more than 2,640,000 dignified homes to Venezuelan families.

Assange’s request to postpone alleged rape hearing due to bad health denied
A Swedish court has rejected a request to postpone a hearing on the detention of the WikiLeaks founder. Julian Assange’s lawyers requested the court session be postponed due to their client’s ill health.
Swedish prosecutors reopened a rape case against Assange earlier this month after Assange was hauled from London’s Ecuadorian embassy and jailed for skipping a bail hearing in 2012. The rape investigation was originally dropped in 2017, and Assange has maintained his innocence since the case was first opened.
The prosecutors filed a request to have Assange detained in absence last week “on probable cause suspected of for rape.” Detention in absence would allow the Swedish government to issue an arrest warrant for Assange.
Swedish defense lawyer Per Samuelson told Reuters on Tuesday that he sought to have the hearing postponed following a visit to Assange in custody on Friday.
“One of the reasons is that Assange's health situation on last Friday was such that it was not possible to conduct a normal conversation with him,” Samuelson said. The lawyer said that any hearing should be stalled until Assange could talk the case through with his legal team “in peace and quiet.”
WikiLeaks Editor-in-Chief Kristinn Hrafnsson has said that the rape case against Assange was reopened as a result of “considerable political pressure on Sweden.” Assange is also the subject of a US extradition request, relating to his publication of a trove of classified US military and diplomatic documents in 2010.
American authorities unveiled 17 new charges, including espionage, against Assange last week, and the WikiLeaks founder could face up to 175 years in prison if convicted. British authorities will ultimately have the final say over which extradition request to honor. (RT)
The United Nations will have to proof now if it has any guts and means left to stop the torture of Julian Assange - otherwise the UN must be abolished, because it then is obvious that the body cannot lead the international community further into the 21th century.

Confirmed: Secretive Bilderberg Meeting to be held in Switzerland from May 30th
The 2019 edition of the exclusive Bilderberg Meeting will take place at the Hotel Montreux Palace in the Swiss town of Montreux from Thursday to Sunday.
It will feature Swiss Finance Minister Ueli Maurer, French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire, the head of Germany’s Christian Democrats, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, and Crédit-Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam among others. List of Participants.
According to Swiss daily Tages Anzeiger, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will also be among the attendees, although he is not on the official guest list on the Bildberg website.
The Swiss paper reports that Pompeo is set to sit down with Ueli Maurer. The two are tipped to discuss the situation in Iran where Switzerland represents US interests.
However, the Swiss Finance Ministry told The Local on Tuesday that no meeting was envisaged between Pompeo and Maurer.
The yearly Bilderberg talk-fest, which dates back to 1954, features a guest list of around 130 people from Europe and North America including everyone from royals to business tycoons and academics.
A highly secretive affair without a fixed agenda, the Bilderberg Meeting is regular fodder for what some media call conspiracy theorists who believe its participants act as a secret world government.
However, organisers argue the private nature of the event gives attendees the chance to hold informal discussions about major issues. But that argument has never gone down well with democratic societies.
Topics up for discussion this year include climate change and sustainability, Brexit, China, Russia, the future of capitalism and the weaponization of social media.
According to the official Bilderberg website, discussions are held under the Chatham House Rule, which means participants can use any information they receive during the meeting but cannot reveal its source. The 2002 version of that rule says: "When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed." It is similar to what the Italian and the Italian-American Mafia calls the Omerta Rule - the code of silence.
This year will be the second time the Bilderberg meeting is held in Switzerland. In 2011, it was held in St Moritz in the country’s southeast. With the short term public announcement the organizers believe to stop critics from attending and from reporting on the meeting or about the participants - selected Brave New World media only.
Update MON 27. May 2019 (vf): Venezuela Welcomes 69 Tons of Medicines From China - WATCH
As part of a bilateral agreement, several shipments have made their way to the South American country since the end of March.
Another total of 69 tons of medicines and health supplies sent from the People's Republic of China arrived Monday in Venezuela, adding up to the previous 200 tons that have been sent in the past.
China's assistance has been one of the various agreements the Venezuelan government has reached with other countries and international organization in order to guarantee the availability of medicines in the country.
Both Venezuela and China maintain close political and economic ties and have so for several years. China, along with Russia, has defended Venezuela at many U.N. Security Council meetings in which the U.S. and its allies attempt to pass resolutions against the Bolivarian Republic.
The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro also denounced the economic blockade by the USA and some of its European allies.
Shippers raise rates for cargo from U.S. to Venezuela, Reuters
Two major shipping lines this month have raised their rates for transporting goods from the United States to Venezuela, according to three industry sources and two documents, as U.S. sanctions limit transit between the two nations.
Washington on May 15 banned direct flights between the United States and Venezuela, citing safety concerns, as part of a broad package of sanctions meant to pressure Nicolas Maduro into resigning as president of the crisis-stricken country.
Citizens and social service organizations often depend on air and sea shipments for basic food and medicine in the hyperinflationary nation where a monthly minimum-wage salary barely pays for a single meal.
Shipping lines Hamburg Sud and King Ocean Services have added a surcharge of $1,200 per container of cargo that leaves the United States for Venezuela after May 15, according to documents seen by Reuters. That service has in recent months been costing between $3,000 and $5,000, depending on the cargo, according to two sources at local ports.
“Shipping companies have increased the cost of their services because of the risk involved in coming to Venezuela with sanctions,” said a local shipping industry source who asked not to be identified.
Hamburg Sud and King Ocean Services did not respond to requests for comment.
In 2016, shipping lines were charging up to three times more to travel to Venezuela than to other South American countries, according to fee schedules seen by Reuters at the time.
U.S. sanctions do not prevent shipping lines from delivering goods to Venezuela.
Washington in April sanctioned four shipping companies and nine oil tankers it said were involved in oil shipments to Cuba.
Sanctioner-in-Chief: 10 Countries Hit by Trump's Favorite Regime Change Tactic in Just Two Years
This can be clearly seen on the 2017 “Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act”, as the name suggests President Donald Trump has opted on sanctions as his preferred mean to attack.
Sanctions can take various forms as embargoes, travel bans, asset takeovers and freezes, capital restraints and trade restrictions. The United States government has been using them against countries and governments that do not comply with their interests.
However, it has been under the recent Trump Administration that sanctions have taken a new meaning, a sort of weaponized public policy to weaken states and affect the well-being of their population, where they are punished for supporting a certain government and cornered into revolting against such a government in favour of ending the externally inflicted crisis and thus allowing a government more favourable by Washington to assume power. READ MORE on the Details.
Already, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday that Russia did not accept the ongoing economical blockage of Cuba or Venezuela by the United States.
Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday that Moscow was ready to play a role in talks between the Venezuelan government and opposition in Oslo if the participants felt it was useful.
Norway said on Saturday that representatives of Venezuela's government and opposition would return to Oslo following an initial round of preliminary talks about how to address the country's political situation.
The Russian foreign ministry said in a statement that Russia welcomed the fact that the talks were continuing, but warned against any external powers trying to foist ultimatums on the Venezuelan leadership.
Likewise, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday that Russia did not accept the ongoing economical blockage of Cuba by the U.S. and that Washington policy in the region promoted discord.
Russia has boosted economic ties with Cuba in recent years as part of a broader move to renew commercial, military and political ties just as the U.S. government is retreating from Cuba under U.S. President Donald Trump.

North Korea Blasts 'War Fanatic' John Bolton Over New Comments
“Bolton is taking issue with normal military exercises conducted by our armed forces as a violation of U.N. Security Council “resolutions,’” the spokesman said. “This is inordinately ignorant.”
The People's Republic of Korea responded to U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton's accusations that their recent missile tests violated the U.N. resolutions. North Korea's Foreign Minister slammed Bolton as “inordinately ignorant” to argue that North Korea’s recent missile tests violated United Nations resolutions.
The spokesman singled out Bolton, who last week said the recent tests “no doubt” violated U.N. resolutions. Bolton, a regular target of North Korean criticism, is working more to destroy peace and security than maintain security, the spokesman added.
The White House has downplayed the tests, with U.S. President Donald Trump saying they were short range and therefore not a breach of trust by leader Kim Jong Un.
Bolton is known in the United States as a “as a war fanatic who whispers war into the ear of the president,” the spokesman added.
Trump Admin Complementing Israeli Effort to Give Nuclear Weapons to Saudi Arabia
Already seven of the 10 countries in the world with the highest military budgets are in the Middle East. The development of nuclear weapons in Saudi Arabia has many speculating that it could mark the beginning of an even more dangerous era for the war-torn region.
Support BDS and widen it to target CHINA and the USA
When, in May 2019, the German Bundestag passed a non-binding resolution declaring the Boycott-Divest-Sanction-Movement (BDS) anti-Semitic, alarm bells began to ring. Because the idea of BDS being anti-Semitic is questionable.
For instance, most peoples links to BDS are through Jewish friends who are part of it, and this was the idea from the beginning: a joint action of West bank Palestinians with Israeli Jews who oppose the occupation of the West Bank.
Thus, quite obviously, something else is going on here: an obscene and diabolical pact between Zionists and true European racists. As a consequence, the sacred memory of the Holocaust is being mobilized to legitimize the corrupted politics of today: the apartheid practised against Palestinians. And it’s those who do it who are the true desecrators of the Holocaust.
The privileged role of Jews in the establishment of the sphere of the “public use of reason” hinges on their subtraction from every state power. It’s this position of the “part of no-part” of every organic nation state community, not the abstract-universal nature of their monotheism, which makes them the immediate embodiment of universality.
Palestinians Protest Against US Blockade on Venezuela
Activists in Ramallah led a rally which denounced the interference of the U.S. in the internal affairs of Venezuela.
Activists and social movements in the Palestinian city of Ramallah held a rally calling for an end to U.S. sanctions against Venezuela and expressed their support for President Nicolas Maduro.
The protest was held this week outside the Venezuelan embassy in Palestine. Venezuelan Ambassador Maher Taha addressed the protest, thanking activists for their support.
A statement from the Foreign Ministry reported that Taha highlighted the close relations between Venezuela and Palestine, which are based on “mutual solidarity and support.” Taha also spoke to the crowd about the crippling human cost of the U.S. economic sanctions, and the illegitimate attempts by the Trump administration and right-wing opposition to overthrow the elected government of President Nicolas Maduro.
In attendance at the rally were prominent figures of Palestine’s political parties, such as Rawhi Fattouh, International Relations spokesman for the ruling Fatah party. Also present was Qais Abu Laila, leader of the socialist Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Along with other activists, they led the rally which denounced the interference of the U.S. in the internal affairs of Venezuela.
The Bolivarian government of Venezuela has long been a supporter of the Palestinian cause, officially recognizing the Palestinian state in 2009. Since then, the two countries have signed over 18 agreements with the Arab nation in areas such as education, energy and development.
Furthermore, Venezuela has been an outspoken critic of Israel, on two occasions then-President Hugo Chavez expelled the Israeli ambassador in Caracas, firstly in 2006 for the war in Lebanon, then again in 2009 in protest at Israel’s assault on Gaza.
In a statement Monday, the Palestinian foreign minister also praised the Czech "commitment to international resolutions and international law.”
The United States moved its embassy to Jerusalem in May 2018 followed by Guatemala. Later, Honduras and Romania said they would follow suit.
The Palestinian foreign ministry welcomed the Czech Republic's rejection to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv because the country would like to remain committed to international agreements on the issue.
Don't separate children from their migrant families - Pope
Pope Francis said on Tuesday that he is willing to confront United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump in person over the proposal to build a wall on the Mexico-U.S. border, adding that the administration’s migration policies are “cruel.”
“I don’t know what’s happening with this new culture of defending territories by building walls. We already knew one, that (one) in Berlin, which brought so many headaches and so much suffering,” the pontiff said during an interview with Mexican media outlet Televisa.
The leader of 1.3 billion Catholics around the world has repeatedly criticized Trump’s migration policies. Back in 2018, he said that populism is not the answer to the world's migration problems, especially referring to the use of separating families at the border.
On Tuesday, he mentioned to it once on this fact adding that “separating children from their parents goes against natural law, and those Christians ... you can’t do it. It is cruel. It is among the greatest of cruelties,” concluding that such policies were “very sad.”
Update SUN 26. May 2019 (vf): Maduro officials & Guaido's opposition to hold talks in Norway
As the Venezuelan government and the opposition remain deadlocked, with Western-backed, self-proclaimed 'interim president' Guaido failing to enlist enough support from the military to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro last month, the parties appear to be turning to diplomacy.
Both Guaido and Maduro confirmed on Saturday that their respective delegations will meet in Oslo next week. It was reported that high-ranking officials from the Maduro government and close aides to Guaido have already arrived in the Norwegian capital.
The confirmation came several hours after Norway announced it would host the negotiations, a follow-up from an earlier round of secretive talks held last week at an undisclosed location in the Norwegian capital.
At the time, Norway's NRK broadcaster reported it was the second time Maduro and Guaido representatives sat down for talks, which would mean the parties are now gearing up for a third round.
While there is little information on the outcome of the previous rounds, it has been confirmed that the opposition delegation would be led by the same lawmakers – National Assembly Vice President Stalin Gonzalez, former Caracas area Mayor Gerardo Blyde, and former Transport Minister Fernando Martinez Mottola.
In a statement on Saturday, Guaido said the opposition would insist on the "cessation of usurpation, transition and free elections."
Maduro thanked the Norwegian government for its role in the peace-making effort, adding that the delegation from Caracas has departed to Oslo "with a willingness to work on the agreed comprehensive agenda and to advance the conclusion of good agreements."
The Venezuelan government delegation would consist of Information Minister Jorge Rodríguez and Miranda state Governor Héctor Rodríguez, who took part in an earlier round of talks, and would also include Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza. The secretary of the Venezuelan National Human Rights Council (HRD), Larry Devoe, is expected to show up as well, AFP reported, citing anonymous officials.
Even as the Venezuelan opposition seems to accept the idea that talks with Maduro may be the preferable way out of the crisis, its backers in the US State Department have been quick to dismiss any solution short of ousting Maduro, stating that the only subject worth discussing is "the conditions of his departure."
"We hope the talks in Oslo will focus on that objective, and if they do, we hope progress will be possible," spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said.
The U.S. was the first country to recognize Guaido, which dozens of its allies took as a nod to do the same. Washington has refused to rule out a military invasion in Venezuela, insisting that "all options" should remain on the table. In the meantime, it has been choking the Venezuelan economy with a barrage of crippling sanctions, estimated to have cost the Latin American country $130 billion since 2015.
On last Monday, Maduro proposed holding snap elections to restock the National Assembly, currently led by Guaido, which functions as a parallel legislature to the Constituent Assembly staffed by Maduro allies. (RT)
Representatives from the Venezuelan Government have returned to Norway to continue peace talks with the Opposition
This call comes just hours after Norway announced that negotiations between delegations of Venezuela’s legitimate president Maduro and self-imposed interim president Guaido will continue next week.
"We pursue all options with responsibility," he tweeted. "Our route is very clear: an end of usurpation, [creation of] interim government and free elections, and will pursue it in all areas of struggle, committed to URGENT changes that our country needs."
The tweet comes just hours after Norway's Foreign Ministry announced it will host the second round of talks between delegations of Venezuela's opposing forces.
"We announce that the representatives of the major political actors in Venezuela have decided to return to Oslo next week to continue a process facilitated by Norway", the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
Reacting to the statement, Maduro thanked the government of Norway for its efforts in making the negotiations possible.
"Our delegation will travel to Oslo with a willingness to work on the agreed comprehensive agenda and to advance the creation of great agreements," Maduro tweeted Saturday.
Speaking before his supporters on Saturday, Guaido said he rejects "false dialogue," promising to pursue Maduro's exit with all means at his disposal.
"Nobody is ever going to confuse us with false dialogue," Guaido told supporters Saturday, without addressing Norway's announcement directly, according to AFP. "We are going to insist, because today by combining all our strategies, using all the tools we have, we are going to get to that final step."
Recently, Guaido resorted to a combination of street protests and talks with the US in his attempts to oust Maduro. His envoy in the US Carlos Vecchio met with US State Department and Pentagon officials in May. While Guaido has not outrightly welcomed a US invasion into Venezuela yet, Vecchio did send a letter to the Pentagon asking for "strategic and operational planning."
On Saturday, the State Department reacted to Oslo talks with a statement in which the spokesperson expressed hope that talks in Oslo will focus on Maduro's departure.
"If they do, we hope progress will be possible," the statement reads.
Venezuela remains entangled in a political crisis since January, when Guaido declared himself the country's interim leader and called for the deposition of Maduro, who won national elections in May 2018. Guaido's attempts to sway the Armed Forces to take his side, including the 30 April coup attempt, have had no success. Maduro's government accuses the opposition of staging numerous attacks on Venezuelan infrastructure which led to massive blackouts and left civilians without food, water and medical care earlier this year. The United States and its allies have backed Guaido, while Russia, China, Turkey and a number of other nations recognize Maduro as the country's only legitimate leader. (Sputnik)

‘Mediation, Not Dialogue’: Guaido Denies Talking to Maduro Reps in Oslo
According to Guaido, Norway does “mediation” between the two sides. Earlier this week, representatives of the two conflicting sides met in Oslo to attempt for a diplomatic solution to the Venezuelan crisis.
Venezuela's self-imposed "interim president" Juan Guaido on Sunday denied that his delegation in Norway engages in dialogue with representatives of President Maduro.
"We must describe what's happening in Norway precisely," Guaido said to his supporters at a rally in the city of Barquisimeto, according to El Nacional. "This is an invitation to a meditation on Norway's part. That said, it is not a negotiation or a dialogue."
According to Guaido, the Oslo meetings must result in the resignation of President Maduro.
"If this doesn't happen, we will stay on the streets and move towards the restoration of democracy," he claimed.
This is an almost word-by-word reiteration of a statement he made on 16 May. At the time, he also said that Norway was mediating and that there were no negotiations going on.
Opposition member Stalin Gonzalez explained earlier that members of the two delegations have never met face to face but talked to the Norwegians in turn. He underscored that the Norwegian process came up with no agreements.
Guaido said that Norway would define the methodology for next week's meeting, without specifying if the two sides would meet directly, according to a Reuters report.
On Saturday, Norway announced the two delegations will continue their talks in Oslo next week. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro thanked Norway for their efforts "to advance the dialogue for peace and stability."
The US State Department reacted to the announcement, saying Washington believes Oslo talks must inevitably end in Maduro's resignation.
Russia, China, Turkey and a number of other nations recognize Nicolas Maduro as the only legitimate leader of Venezuela, while the US and its allies backed the self-imposed "president" Juan Guaido.

The US is Buying Venezuelan Oil Again
From May 10 to 17, the United States imported 49,000 barrels of Venezuelan crude oil. This is the first time that the US imports Venezuelan oil in weeks and the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, María Zakharova, has commented on the figure, published in the weekly report of the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Zakharova recalled that in March, the press reported that the special envoy of the United States Government for Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, had said that the United States was seeking “the complete isolation of President Nicolás Maduro on the international stage and, above all, the cessation of any commercial transaction of banks, companies and corporations with Venezuela that would be beneficial for Maduro”.
Zakharova countered Abrams’ words [with the fact] that the USA has resumed Venezuelan oil imports at 49,000 barrels a day.
“And so always, first they encourage everyone to do something and then they change their maneuver 180 degrees, leaving behind those who gave in,” she said.
On January 28, Washington announced the imposition of sanctions against state oil company PDVSA and blocked the assets and interests of the Venezuelan company in its jurisdiction for 7,000 million dollars. The truth is that deliveries of Venezuelan oil in the United States for the first week of April reached 139,000 barrels per day, while during the previous three weeks it had been at zero, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
In annual terms, deliveries decreased 4.5 times from the level of 631,000 barrels per day, recorded during the first week of April 2018. From March 11 to March 29, according to statistics, oil was not supplied from Venezuela to the USA. (Sputnik - Translated by JRE\EF-OT)

Update SAT 25. May 2019 (vf): MASTERSTROKE REVISITED:
A detailed plan leaked from “UNITED STATES SOUTHERN COMMAND” dated “23 FEBRUARY 2018” was issued with the title “PLAN TO OVERTHROW THE VENEZUELAN DICTATORSHIP ‘MASTERSTROKE’” [see HERE]
This document was personally signed by Admiral Kurt W. Tidd, who was the Commander (the chief), at SOUTHCOM, and he was thus the top U.S. military official handling Venezuela. But this was far more than just a military plan.
It was comprehensive — directing military, diplomatic, and propaganda, policies — regarding the Trump Administration’s planned “Overthrow” of Venezuela’s Government. His plan has since guided the Administration’s entire operation, including “the capacities of the psychological war,” regarding Venezuela.
Review of U.S. MASTERSTROKE / SOUTHCOM plan and status quo:

Its is interesting for readers and embarrassing for the government of the USA to see the hypocritical media release: Continued U.S. Support for Democracy in Venezuela issued by Mike Pompeo's Department of State of the USA today.
Imagine a same-style statement would be issued by Venezuela (simply because it could be issued based on facts):
Free elections cannot be overseen by a tyrant. As we have repeatedly stated, we believe the only thing to negotiate with Donald Trump is the conditions of his departure. We hope the talks will focus on that objective, and if they do, we hope progress will be possible.
We wish to note that today marks the many days since the arrests and disappearances of so many U.S. dissidents or people who object the U.S. wars. Since their detention they had no contact with their families or attorneys, and their location is unknown, because the massive report on the CIA’s detention, interrogation and rendition has not been fully declassified. Today also marks a month and two week since the US-manipulated imprisonment of journalist Julian Assange, First Founding Father of WikiLeaks, the worlds last remaining democratic media institution with the guts to expose U.S. war-crimes. He is among the over 80.000 political prisoners the U.S. regime holds by itself or through proxy as of May 25. This includes the prisoners at GITMO camp, a U.S. torture facility that desecrates the land at Guantanamo bay in Cuba since long and must be closed. It is specifically horrific that the Trump Administration still holds people there against whom no legal process succeeded to convict them of any wrongdoing.
We join supporters of democracy in the USA throughout the world in condemning the illegal imprisonment of innocent people by the U.S. regime or its vassal-states and in demanding their immediate release.
Greg Palast, Investigative Journalist: "We have a First Amendment for a reason, and it doesn't say unless it's embarrassing to the U.S. government, unless Hillary Clinton doesn't like it, unless it makes it difficult for the State Department to play the games it plays. The point is we are government of the people, by the people, for the people. It's not their information. It's ours. And all Julian Assange did was give us our information which our own government was wrongly and illegally concealing from us." MUST LISTEN

"A superpower that has been preparing for 9 years, with hundreds of people and untold millions spent on the case. I am defenseless and am counting on you and others of good character to save my life. I am unbroken, albeit literally surrounded by murderers, but, the days where I could read and speak and organize to defend myself, my ideals, and my people are over until I am free! Everyone else must take my place. The US government, or rather, those regrettable elements in it that hate truth, liberty and justice, want to cheat their way into my extradition and death, rather than letting the public hear the truth, for which I have won the highest awards in journalism and have been nominated 7 times for the Nobel Peace Prize. Truth, ultimately, is all we have." - Julian Paul Assange

Update FRI 24. May 2019 (vf): Venezuela to Create 4G Network With Help of China's Huawei, Russian Companies
Venezuela hopes to develop a nationwide 4G system with the help of Russian and Chinese technology, particularly from the Asian country’s Huawei, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said.
The Venezuelan president stated that Caracas is aiming to develop its satellite technologies.
"There are a lot of things that I should address. The first one is the creation of a telecommunications corporation… I have ordered to make an investment and, together with China's technologies, Huawei technologies and the technologies of Russian companies, bring telecommunications [to a new level] and make a nationwide 4G network a reality in Venezuela to ensure Venezuela has fast communications, internet, and telephony", Maduro said in an address published on Twitter late on Thursday.
During Maduro's visit to Russia last December, Moscow and Caracas agreed to launch the Russian navigation satellite system GLONASS in the Latin American country.
However, also in Venezuela specialists agree that Venezuela must block any 5G roll-out in the country and be aware of Chinese spy technology.
Riot in Venezuelan Detention Centre Kills 29 - Source
A riot in a pretrial detention centre in Venezuela on Friday saw 29 killed and 19 injured, a source in the Venezuelan state prosecutor's office has told Sputnik.
"According to updated data, there are 19 injured and 29 killed", the source said. The source added that there were 14 employees of the pre-trial detention centre among those 19 persons injured in the incident. They had gunshot and blast injuries.
An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway, according to the source.
In April 2019, a similar incident occurred in Venezuela's Nueva Esparta state. On said it had found evidence of extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detentions and deaths and injuries due to excessive use of force by Maduro’s government. e person was killed and two other people were injured after about 60 prisoners escaped from a local jail. The inmates, who seized arms from a guardhouse, attacked and injured two prison guards, local media reported.
In March 2019 Amnesty International said it had found evidence of extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detentions and deaths and injuries due to excessive use of force by Maduro’s government.
As Venezuela was rocked by protests demanding a change of government in January, at least 47 people were killed, according to the report. More than 900 people were arbitrarily detained over the five days of protests in late January, including 770 detentions in just one day.
An Amnesty International team visited Venezuela between Jan. 31 and Feb. 17 2019 and documented six extrajudicial executions, three cases of excessive force and six arbitrary detentions, according to the report.
In March 2018 things got out of control shortly after relatives of those inside the police station found out. A large crowd demanded answers on what led to the incident and information on those who were injured or killed. The crowd stood outside the police station but were later dispersed by tear gas.
The UN Human Rights Office had called for a speedy investigation after 68 people lost their lives in that fire at a police station in Venezuela. The fire reportedly started when prisoners set fire to mattresses inside the building.
Venezuela's Foreign Minister: "Regrettably, another Venezuelan child died waiting for their bone marrow transplant as a result of the criminal US blockade, which prevents the transfer of funds to Italian health institutions with which PDVSA deals with for these urgent cases." Caracas also denounced a smear campaign against Venezuelan efforts to save the lives of kids affected by US sanctions. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza accuses some media of spreading fake news in relation to the deaths of several Venezuelan minors who failed to receive a transplant when they were in Italy. The foreign minister recalls that the Venezuelan government carried out this social assistance through its Citgo oil branch – confiscated by the US – and points out that Caracas did send funds for the health program, but they were retained by the Novo Banco de Portugal allegedly complying with Washington sanctions.
This complaint comes in reference to an article that Daniel Lozano wrote in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo on May 25, which stated that the deaths of these children are due to the suspension of that humanitarian program by the offices of Nicolás Maduro.
In this regard, the Venezuelan diplomat shared images of some payment orders issued by PDVSA to transfer resources and give continuity to the health program in Italy, and the vouchers of the transactions rejected and canceled by Novo Banco. Those resources were withheld, blocked.
Recently, the executive secretary of the National Human Rights Council, Larry Devoe, denounced international banking for rendering ineffective the transfers requested by PDVSA and other institutions for 4 million 851 thousand 278 euros for the treatment of patients. Knowing these shortcomings, the Venezuelan Government seeks to develop production lines of these inputs with support from other countries. According to the statistics of the Pharmaceutical programe, 98% of the elements that the health system requires are imported.
Venezuela could become a pole of development of these inputs through its petrochemical industry. Now more than ever, producing is more than a challenge: it’s a real need.
By jumping on the U.S.-imposed blockade bandwagon, European countries as well as their development entities, businesses and financial institutions, were really short-sighted and didn't realize that such also was a USAmerican trap to stop Europeans from utilizing the many good economic co-operation opportunities, for which the Venezuelans rule out U.S.-American businesses.

US Senator Calls for Invasion of Venezuela if Maduro Refuses to Resign
US President Donald Trump needs to warn Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to leave office or face a US military invasion similar to the 1983 invasion of Grenada ordered by former President Ronald Reagan, Senator Lindsey Graham said in a press release.
"In the 1980s, confronted with Cuban intervention in Grenada, President Reagan intervened militarily, ensuring Grenada didn’t become a satellite state of Cuba", Graham said on Thursday. "The United States must be willing to intervene in Venezuela the way we did in Grenada".
Graham said if Trump put both Cuba and Maduro on notice, it would send a clear message to dictators and despots that the United States means what it says.
In 1983, 8,000 US soldiers defeated 700 Cuban troops in Grenada within a week and orchestrated a regime change in the tiny Caribbean island that is just 100 miles from Venezuela. Geography and dimensions seem not to be strong segments in the Senator's knowledge base. Being a friend of Bolton but a foe of President Trump, the Senator already had pushed to go to war with Iran and North-Korea.
While on a trip to Côte d’Ivoire last week to help Ivanka Trump promote women’s access to capital in Africa, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) warned of religious wars with “radical ideology” that would be “hell on earth for women” if they are not “destroyed.”
“It’s the enemy of mankind, not just the United States,” Graham said, of the theoretical invaders, according to a recording provided to The Daily Beast. “Some of our soldiers will be needed, but not a lot. Most of the fighting will be done by people in the region. I promise you the enemy will lose because very few mothers or fathers want to turn their daughters over to ISIS, al Qaeda, or any other group.”
As the senator spoke, confused attendees could be heard on the recording asking each other in hushed tones what he was talking about. President Trump has in the past referred to countries in Africa as “shitholes” and has yet to visit the continent.

U.S.AMERICANS MUST STAND UP AGAINST THEIR EXPORTS OF DEATH AND THEIR WEAPON SALES TO COMMIT FURTHER GENOCIDE
All the U.S. war-drums on Iran are just a show and cover-up to get an arms sale to the Arabs going. WATCH
A US$8.1 billion dollar arms sale will be offered to Arab allies to "deter" Iranian aggression," Pompeo said Friday, AFP reports.
Since the U.S.American people now know the plan, they will - if the sale is not stopped - be guilty in the war-crimes committed with them.
U.S. President Donald Trump is invoking a rare executive provision bypassing congressional review in order to extend a multi-billion dollar arms sale to Saudi Arabia, citing alleged threats from Iran to the kingdom, U.S. Secretary Mike Pompeo confirmed Friday.
Per the Arms Export Control Act, US$8.1 billion in ammunition, bombs, precision-guided munitions, and military support are being sent to Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, Pompeo said.
The secretary said the decision was fuelled by an existing emergency “which requires the immediate sale” of weapons “in order to deter further the malign influence of the government of Iran throughout the Middle East region.”
Pompeo continued, saying the transfers “must occur as quickly as possible in order to deter further Iranian adventurism in the Gulf and throughout the Middle East.”
Sen. Chris Murphy, Connecticut’s Democratic representative said that “President Trump is only using this loophole because he knows Congress would disapprove of this sale. There is no new ‘emergency’ reason to sell bombs to the Saudis.”
Democratic New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez criticized the move, citing no practical or legal reason justifying the executive decision, outside of an alleged threat from Iran.
“I am disappointed, but not surprised, that the Trump administration has failed once again to prioritize our long term national security interests or stand up for human rights, and instead is granting favors to authoritarian countries like Saudi Arabia,” said Menendez.
The arms sale comes just hours after Trump announced his plans to send already now 1,500 additional troops to the region as a response for an unspecified threat from Iran. Earlier Trump was considering to send 10,000 more troops to the Middle East.

Reuters: US Prepares New Sanctions Against Venezuela and Intends to Sabotage CLAP Program
The Government of the United States in its plan to suffocate the Venezuelan economy, has now proposed to attack the Local Committee of Food and Production (Clap), a program executed by President Nicolás Maduro to provide food to most of the population.
The Reuters news agency reported that the United States is preparing new sanctions against Venezuelan government officials related to the CLAP, in addition to increasing the economic blockade against the South American country.
In this plan of harassment against the Venezuelan people, the National Security Council and the Treasury, State and Justice Departments of the United States would be involved.

President Maduro: “Colombian Mafias Steal Venezuelan Cocoa and Sell it as Colombian”
The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, on Wednesday denounced the smuggling of Venezuelan cocoa by Colombian mafias for illegal sale in the world as Colombian.
“There are Colombian Mafias that come to steal Venezuelan cocoa, the best in the world, and sell it as if it were Colombian cocoa,” he said during a productive day held from the Almacenadora Caracas, in Flores de Catia, from which Venezuela exported 50 metric tons of cocoa beans to Indonesia.
The Head of State recalled a conversations held with the former Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos, in which he said that Colombia was producing cocoa in the department of Arauca, a zone bordering Venezuela, and in response the Venezuelan President said that this item was being extracted illegally from the Venezuelan territory. “In Arauca, surely the only cocoa that the smugglers are processing is Venezuelan and they export it,” he stressed on that occasion.
As part of the measures to counteract the attacks of the economic blockade imposed by the United States government, Venezuela intends to reach the goal of exporting 13,000 tons per year of this item. For this, it has 90,000 cultivated hectares, distributed in 18 states and partnerships have been established with the private sector.
Last February, Venezuela exported 25 tons of cocoa to the Asian nation, produced in Miranda state. From this same space, the packaging of the load produced in 97% of fermentation was made, which makes it of the best quality in the world. (La IguanaTV - Translated by JRE\EF-OT)
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused opposition figure Juan Guaido of stealing US-based Venezuelan oil refiner Citgo, which is owned by the state-run PDVSA company.
"Mr. Juan Guaido, acting together with imperialism, has stolen Citgo from us. And I am asking, what have they done with the money? Where is the Citgo money? They have stolen the Citgo money from us. And the products meant for our oil refineries were stolen from us, too", Maduro said live on Periscope on Wednesday.
PDVSA’s assets worth $7 billion were blocked by the United States amid the political crisis in Venezuela in January when Guaido proclaimed himself the country’s interim president and was immediately endorsed by Washington and a number of US allies.
The opposition subsequently appointed new members to the boards of directors of the two companies. PDVSA called the move an attempt to steal the wealth of Venezuelans.
Meanwhile, Venezuela’s oil production hit a 16 year low in April as a result of mismanagement as well as US sanctions against the nation’s energy sector, the Energy Information Administration said in a report on Monday.
Hamburg-based BSM is now looking to arrest - the legal term for preventing a ship from moving, but short of an outright seizure - the three tankers in question over debt accumulated by PDVSA.
“Due to the substantial fees due to BSM from owners we have placed arrest on three of the tankers, the Arita in Singapore and the Parnaso and Rio Arauca which are both in Lisbon, Portugal,” said a letter distributed internally by BSM this month.
BSM is not the only maritime firm taking action against PDVSA. U.S.-based shipbroker McQuilling Partners in March ended a contract for providing four tankers to PDVSA, citing sanctions.
The two maritime services firms handled a large portion of vessels leased and owned by PDVSA. Without them, Venezuela is limited in its ability to store oil, move cargoes between ports internally, and even export to certain destinations.
On April 6, the Arita, owned by PDVSA’s subsidiary Albanave and operated by a unit of BSM, was detained in Singapore by law firm Gurbani & Co on behalf of BSM, according to the country’s Supreme Court website and a source familiar with the matter.
BSM’s attempt to arrest the Parnaso and the Rio Arauca in Portugal has been more complicated. Those two vessels have been moored in that country’s waters since 2017 due to disputes with shipping firms and fuel providers in Portugal, along with Lisbon’s Port Authority.
BSM, Lisbon Port Authority and PDVSA’s maritime unit PDV Marina declined to comment. PDVSA did not respond to a request for comment. In March, it said its relationship with BSM had not ended.
The amount owed by PDV Marina to BSM globally at the end of 2018 was at least $15 million, according to a source at the company and another document seen by Reuters early this year.
The Arita, an Aframax vessel that can hold up to 700,000 barrels of oil, has not navigated much since it first set sail at the end of 2017, as it was hampered by a dispute between PDVSA and Iranian shipyard Sadra that kept it from being used. Following a few trips to China and Indonesia in 2018, it has remained in Singapore since April with its engine “immobilized,” according to Refinitiv Eikon tanker tracking data.

“Any Military Action Could be Executed”: SouthCom Chief’s New Threat
The admiral of the US Southern Command, Craig Faller, said on Wednesday, talking about the alleged actions that the army is taking around Venezuela, that they “would not be revealed yet.”
The latent threat implemented by the US Government against Venezuela does not cease to get involved in every possible space, as happened this Wednesday during a meeting in Miami on “Hemispheric Security”:
“Any military action could be executed but they do not want to reveal the strategies to the enemy (…) my job as military is to be ready and I will not intentionally go into more details than that because it would be inappropriate,” Faller said.
It is necessary to remember that in previous days the opposition and Juan Guaidó requested a meeting with this Command in order to weigh military “aid” strategies against Venezuela but SouthCom rejected the meeting alleging an inappropriate channel of communication. BREAKING: As already feared and predicted, WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange has now been charged under the infamous Espionage Act — which was used to imprison Daniel Ellsberg, Emma Goldman, and Socialist Presidential Candidate Eugene Debs. Assange is not a spy — they sell secrets and keep secrets — he exposed truths the U.S. government concealed from We the People. And where are the NY Times and Amazon Post? They should turn in the prizes they got for Assange’s courage and work, demand famous journalists like Greg Palast and others.
Though the indictement is full of false conclusions, the listed true heroic acts of Julian Assange are actually a good foundation for a laudatio to finally award him the nobel prize for which he has been nominatated.
The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday announced 17 new criminal charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, saying he unlawfully published the names of classified sources and conspired and assisted ex-Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning in obtaining access to classified information.
The superseding indictment comes a little more than a month after the Justice Department unsealed a narrower criminal case against Assange.
He was initially charged with conspiring with Manning to gain access to a government computer as part of a 2010 leak by WikiLeaks of hundreds of thousands of U.S. military reports about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, some of which exposed potential war crimes.
In response to new charges, Wikileaks tweeted: "This is madness. It is the end of national security journalism and the first amendment."
Assange was arrested by British police from the Ecuadorean embassy in London last month after Ecuadorian president Lenin Moreno illegally withdrew the earlier granted asylum.

The Trump administration could avoid Congress altogether by citing rising tensions with Iran to call on "emergency provisions" of deadly weapons.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s top officials are getting ready to bypass Congress using a legal loophole in order to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia, amid rising tensions with Iran.
“I am hearing that Trump may use an obscure loophole in the Arms Control Act and notice a major new sale of bombs to Saudi Arabia (the ones they drop in Yemen) in a way that would prevent Congress from objecting. Could happen this week,” Senator Chris Murphy (D) warned Wednesday on Twitter.
This comes after the U.S. Senate and House approved a bipartisan resolution in February and March, using the 1973 War Powers Act to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led coalition in the war in Yemen, and rebuffing President Donald Trump's policy toward the kingdom. Trump vetoed the congressional resolution, but any sale of weapons would still need congressional approval.
However, the Trump administration could avoid Congress altogether by citing rising tensions with Iran in order to call on emergency provisions. If a national emergency is declared, Trump would justify selling weapons to Saudi Arabia by arguing that the Kingdom is a strategic partner in the region.
According to a report from the University Network for Human Rights (UNHR) and Yemeni monitoring group Mwatana, the U.S. — and U.K. — made weapons have killed or maimed nearly 1,000 civilians in Yemen, including children and women, since the start of the war in 2015.
Dubbed the “Forgotten War,” the Yemeni civil war started on March 26, 2015, when Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates led a coalition of countries into a military campaign against Ansar Allah (Houthi) rebels in Yemen in support of the Saudi-backed government of Abd-Rabu Mansour Hadi.
The war in Yemen has already, according to a United Nation’s report, claimed 230,000 lives, many of those civilian, and has left almost 14 million people at increased risk of famine. “At least 85,000 children may have died of hunger and preventable diseases,” General Director of Pax International Jan Gruiters said.
#Migrant children keep dying under #US custody. The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Wednesday the death of a sixth migrant child in U.S. custody, a 10 year young girl, who's death had gone previously unreported. She had been put in March 2018 in detention by United States Border Patrol, an organization that has come under fire of late after the deaths of five other children they arrested. Still the mojority of children forcefully seperated from their families after such arrest has not been reunited with their next of kin, thereby violating a court order, which President Trump's administration had received and which stands.
MUST WATCH: TT (TrumpTyranny) - 17 U.S. states enacting laws against free speech
Since President Trump’s inauguration, at least 17 U.S. states have introduced laws to punish pipeline protestors, citing the need to “critical infrastructure.” However, the constitutionality of anti-protest laws is now questioned in court and a growing pushback against them is mounting.
Update WED 22. May 2019 (vf): Every European country would have gone to war with the aggressor over such:
As of January 23, 2019, the aggressiveness of the U.S. blockade against Venezuela increased remarkably following the unconstitutional actions taken by U.S.-backed opposition congressman Juan Guaido, who self-declared as "president in charge" in a new attempt to destabilize the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
However, the latest sanctions by Washington against Venezuela come as a culmination of almost half a decade of U.S. aggression by multiple successive administrations seeking to put an end to decades of leftist rule in the oil-rich South American country.
While the recent U.S. sanctions are blocking the Venezuelan people from using over US$11 billion from Citgo Petroleum, a corporation owned by Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), total damages are estimated at US$130 billion for the period between 2015 to 2018, as the Venezuelan Ambassador to Russia, Carlos Rafael Faria Tortosa, said Tuesday.
While the Venezuelan government, human rights organizations and experts, as well as economists, warn that such sanctions are directly affecting the Venezuelan people, U.S. officials seem to have little care to their suffering.
In October 2018, during an exclusive interview with VOA media, former U.S. ambassador to Venezuela William Brownfield said the "best solution" would be to "accelerate" the collapse of the Bolivarian Revolution even if that implied a greater burden of human suffering.
teleSUR put together a timeline of economic sanctions and hurdles placed on the Venezuelan government by both the United States government and the U.S. banking system, revealing a strategic escalation of aggression by the U.S. government over the past few years.
The U.S. Congress approves Law 113-278: "Public Law for the Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society in Venezuela", which establishes the road map for unilateral coercive measures by the U.S. and the countries that operate within its sphere of influence.
This law expressly established "sanctions" against the Central Bank of Venezuela and Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), the main state company that has a monopoly on the exploitation of all the Nation's hydrocarbons and generates more than 90 percent of the revenues in the country.
With this legal instrument, the United States opened the doors for unilateral measures to block and freeze assets, funds, property and Venezuelan properties; suspension of entry, revocation of the visa or other documentation to officials and officials who hold public office, military officers and diplomatic representatives.
All these actions were aimed at creating the conditions of an economic, financial and commercial embargo on Venezuela, as well as to hinder the participation of state representatives in international relations.
U.S. President Barack Obama signs a decree which designates Venezuela as an "unusual and extraordinary threat to the U.S. National Security." As a result of this decision, Citibank refused to receive Venezuelan funds seeking to purchase 300,000 insulin doses required for the treatment of Venezuelan diabetic patients.
Due to pressures from the U.S. Treasury Department, the German bank Commerzbank unilaterally closed the accounts of Venezuelan public institution and companies.
Citibank unilaterally ceased the service of correspondent accounts in foreign currency of Venezuelan institutions in the US, including those of the Venezuela's Central Bank (BCV).
Risk rating agencies assigned Venezuela the world's highest financial risk (2,640 points), well above countries at war, despite having fulfilled its external debt commitments. Venezuela had paid US$63.4 billion in debt service since 2013; however, the financial risk increased 202 percent during the same period, rising from an average of 768 in 2012 to 2,323 in 2016.
Portugal's Novo Banco reported the impossibility of conducting dollar-denominated operations with Venezuelan banks, due to pressures exerted by its correspondent banks.
In order to partially refinance its financial obligations and reschedule its debt amortizations, the Venezuelan government makes an offer to exchange US$ 7.1 billion in PDVSA bonds. The U.S.-based risk rating agencies threatened investors with declaring default if they agree to the Venezuelan proposal.
J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. issued a false default alert about an alleged US$404 million PDVSA debt default.
Venezuela did not receive a shipment of new banknotes from the Crane Currency company, which is a U.S. Treasury Department's supplier and was contracted by the Venezuelan state to print currency cone pieces.
The Delaware Trust company, an agent of payments of PDVSA bonds, announced that its U.S. correspondent, the PNC Financial Services Group, refused to receive funds from the Venezuelan oil company.
The U.S. Executive Order 13808 prohibited all transactions aimed at financing Venezuela, banned direct or indirect purchases of Venezuelan government securities, which included bonds, loans, credit extensions, loan guarantees, credit letters, drafts, bankers acceptance, invoices or discount notes, and commercial papers.
With this order, the U.S. blockade against the Bolivarian government became official and granted legal status to the financial boycott, making private banks an openly active partner of the U.S. isolation policy.
The Swiss multinational investment bank Credit Suisse prohibited its clients from carrying out financial transactions with Venezuela.
The Bank of China at Panama informed that it would not carry out any operation in favor of Venezuela due to both instructions from the U.S. Treasury Department and pressures coming from the Panamanian government.
Similarly, Russian banks refused to make transactions towards Venezuelan banks due to restrictions imposed by correspondent banks based in the U.S. and Europe.
Claiming administrative reasons, the BDC Shandong's correspondent paralyzed a US$200 million transaction towards Venezuela even though the People's Republic of China had already rotated the corresponding funds.
Venezuela could not deposit money in the Swiss UBS Investment Bank to pay for vaccines and medicines purchased through the Pan American Health Organization (PHO). This caused a delay of four months in the acquisition of vaccines and altered the Venezuelan vaccination schedules.
The Deutsche Bank, the main correspondent of the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) main correspondent, definitively closed all Venezuelan accounts.
International banks refused 23 Venezuelan operations, worth US$39 million, aimed at purchasing food, basic supplies and medicines.
The Standard and Poor's rating agency declared Venezuela to be in "selective default," a condition which was fabricated by not registering a payment process on time.
Wilmington Trust, a company managing bonds, accused the Venezuelan company Corpoelec of not paying US$27 million in debt interests. This happened in a moment when Venezuela's means of payment were going through a full blockade within the U.S. financial system.
U.S. banks arbitrarily blocked 19 bank accounts through which Venezuela had been making payments to land transport sabotage services. This caused fuel shortages in several states and also hindered transactions related to 471,000 vehicle tires which had already been paid.
European banks delayed a US$29.7 million transaction through which the Venezuelan Committees for Local Supply and Production (CLAP)'s food program was paying its suppliers.
J.P. Morgan Chase delayed accepting resources for US$28.1 million which were destined to pay services from vessels transporting food supplies to Venezuela.
About US$ 1.2 billion in Venezuelan sovereign bonds and PDVSA bonds could not be repaid to their creditors due to the Trump administration's sanctions.
The U.S. Treasury Department extended financial penalties established in the August 2017 Executive Order 13808. The renegotiation or restructuring of the Venezuelan debt, issued by the government and its public enterprises before August 25, 2017, was impeded.
President Trump renewed executive orders 13692 and 13808 for an additional year. He also prohibited debt restructuring in favor of Citgo Petroleum and prevented the repatriation of this company's dividends.
The U.S. issued executive order 13827 which prohibits any citizen or institution from making financial transactions with 'Petro', a Venezuela's state-owned cryptocurrency.
During the Summit of the Americas, Peru's Foreign Minister announced that Lima Group has decided to create a follow-up group to study further political and economic measures against Venezuela.
In the same event, Colombia and the U.S. agreed to accelerate mechanisms to chase Venezuela's financial transactions and hinder basic products supply lines.
In retaliation for the victory of Nicolas Maduro in the presidential elections on May 20, 2018, to assume a 2019-2025 term, in which the Bolivarian leader received 67 percent of 9 million votes, the U.S. issued executive order 13835 which prohibits purchasing debt and accounts payable by Venezuelan state-owned companies. In addition, the Trump administration sanctioned 20 Venezuelan companies for alleged ties to drug trafficking.
Thus the U.S. government banned all kinds of operations related to the sale, transfer, assignment, or granting as guarantee performed by any U.S.-based company in which the Venezuelan government had a share of 50 percent of more.
Due to this, over 15,000 hemodialysis patients received no supplies, for US$9 million aimed at purchasing dialysis supplies were blocked. The Colombian government blocked a 400,000 kilos supplies shipment for the Venezuelan food subsidy program.
The Brazilian government did not pay US$40 million to the Venezuela's Electricity Corporation for its energy supply to the Roraima state. Brazil's Foreign Minister, Aloysio Nunes, had declared that his country's debt could not be canceled due to "the economic and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. and the European Union."
Through a new coercive measure, the Trump Administration prohibited U.S. citizens from trading gold exported from Venezuela.
The Trump Administration approved new sanctions against PDVSA, which included freezing US$7 billion in assets owned by its U.S. subsidiary company, CITGO. This measure will bring about US$11 billion estimated export-related losses in the coming years.
On Jan. 28, the State Department and the Department of the Treasury ceded control of CITGO and Venezuelan bank accounts in its territory to Guaido's representatives.
In Europe, as a result of an extraterritorial and illegal application of coercive measures, the Bank of England announced the confiscation of Venezuela's gold reserves valued at US$ 1.4 billion.
As a consequence of executive order 13850, the production and trading operations of the Venezuelan Guyana Mining Corporation (Minerven) were affected.
This executive order also compromised the operations of the Venezuelan Economic and Social Development Bank (Bandes) and the institutions over which it retains the 50 percent ownership, namely, Bandes Uruguay, People's Bicentenary Bank, Universla Bank, Bank of Venezuela and Prodem Bank.
The operations of more than 30 PDVSA oil tankers were blocked.
The US government has now sanctioned individuals involved with Venezuela’s food program which feeds more than six million families. Washington is now claiming that the program, called CLAP, is laundering money and “corroding” democracy, offering no evidence for that. WATCH
U.S. Foreign Relation Committee Passes the “VERDAD Act for Venezuela”
The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved on Wednesday the Venezuela Emergency Relief, Democracy Assistance, and Development Act (VERDAD), presented by Senators Bob Menéndez, of New Jersey, and Marco Rubio, from Florida.
The project is considered “the most robust effort to date to face the crisis in Venezuela,” according to a note published on Menéndez’s personal website.
According to the senators – openly anti-Chavistas – the VERDAD act “increases humanitarian assistance to Venezuela in a forceful way” and “recognizes and supports the efforts” of the opposition deputy Juan Guaidó, who proclaimed himself ‘interim president’ of the South American country with the recognition of Washington, and has promoted measures to deepen the economic blockade of the Bolivarian nation.
Also, this law “accelerates the planning of financial institutions for the reconstruction of the country after (Nicolás) Maduro”.
Rubio celebrated the approval of the legislation with a message on Twitter, which states that the regulation will support “humanitarian aid for Venezuela”, which, according to the text, will rise to 400 million dollars, although without specifying how these resources will arrive.
In the text, they emphasize that “a policy is established so that the US looks for a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the crisis in Venezuela,” and that nothing in the bill” can be considered as an authorization for the use of military force.”
The VERDAD act promotes more punitive measures against Caracas, such as the revocation of visas for family members of individuals previously sanctioned.
In addition, it urges the US Department of State to invite the governments of Latin America and Europe to implement other coercive and unilateral measures to suffocate the nation, whose population is already suffering the ravages of the financial blockade promoted by Washington.
Likewise, they urge the Departments of State, Treasury and Justice to carry out “international efforts to freeze, recover and reuse the funds” of the Venezuelan Government abroad.
Since January, after the self-proclamation of Guaidó, the US has imposed sanctions on some 70 members of the Venezuelan Government, including heads of the public powers, the military, governors, and President Nicolás Maduro himself. In addition, in recent months it has blocked some 30,000 million dollars from accounts of the Venezuelan State abroad, necessary for the importation of basic products, food and medicine.
The main sanctions are directed at the state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) and to deliver the assets of the Venezuelan state, which are located in US banks, to Guaidó. (La IguanaTV - Translated by JRE\EF-OT)
Criminal Difference: See the Pan Flour Price in Colombia and Venezuela
One kilo of the precooked white corn flour produced by Empresas Polar and extensively used in Venezuela for “arepas”, and destined for the Colombian market has a price of 4,650 bolivars (US$ 0.85), at the exchange rate. However, the same product in the Venezuelan market has a retail price of 12,000 bolivares (US$ 2.18).
The president of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), Diosdado Cabello, described during his radio show, “Nos vemos en la radio”, this price differential as “criminal” and assured that sooner or later actions will be taken to protect the purchasing power of Venezuelans, because “we are not going anywhere with businessmen who are rascals, who use the needs and pain of the people,” he said.
Also, he commented that there shouldn’t be a price difference because the Venezuelan Government gives Polar Companies dollars and corn for flour production.
“How do you justify that? I assure you that in Colombia you have to sow, I assure you that in Colombia they do not give you a dollar, here we give you the dollars, you do not sow a single stalk and then you raise the prices three times over,” he said on Monday. (La IguanaTV - Translated by JRE\EF-OT)
The answer to Diosdado Cabello's question is very simple: The POLAR corporation is a remanent of white-supremacist conquistadores heritage and in bed with Juan Guaido, who wants to beat the Venezuelans into submission to the USA by every and all means on can think of.
Already in 2016, the Maduro administration had worked alongside Venezuelan workers to reclaim abandoned factories of POLAR in support of worker-controlled projects. Venezuelans took over Kimberly-Clark’s factory and have since collaborated with the government to produce personal, feminine, and baby care products.
The president of Venezuela has also ordered the military to comb its ranks in search of “traitors” over the looming threat of a US military invasion.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ordered the Armed Forces to prepare to repel a possible US invasion in a Tweet published Wednesday.
"I have ordered all military branches to be vigilant and be ready to protect the peace, to make any attempt by the North American empire to try anything against our homeland impossible. Peace will be our victory!" he tweeted in Spanish.
NYT Revealed Why Guaido Decided to Negotiate in Norway A report by the US newspaper the New York Times (NYT) reveals the reasons why Venezuln opposition figure Juan Guaidó would be in a negotiation plan with the government of Nicolás Maduro, according to La Iguana, colported by Orinoco Tribune.
After a failed coup d’état the European allies of Guaidó in seeing the failed attempts to depose Maduro and without an “expeditious resolution”, were forced to take the conflict “to the diplomatic terrain” and “they redoubled their efforts to achieve a negotiated pact between the opposition and the government.”
NYT asserts that Guaidó, who moves between houses where he stays due to an alleged persecution by the Venezuelan State after the coup against Maduro, stated: “The persecution of the government has been very savage”, he told the newspaper from one of the “safe houses” where he has been hiding, according to the text.
Guaidó’s recent statements, saying that he will not “come to any agreement with Maduro,” NYT says, seem to contradict the actions seen in Norway.
Likewise, the meetings of the opposition leader with representatives of the Contact group in Caracas, as well as the meetings of intermediary figures with friends to the Government of Nicolás Maduro, such as the Canadian Chancellor in Cuba and the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo , with Putin, seem to be paving the way to a solution through more diplomatic means.
Before fleeing Venezuela and after the failed coup d’état, the head of the Cabinet of Juan Guaidó, Rafael del Rosario, acknowledged to the media that “the objective of getting Maduro out seems to be more distant”.

'Leave Venezuela Alone': Brazil's Lula Tells Trump in Interview
Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva requested respect for the Venezuelan people and their right to decide their own future.
In an interview aired Tuesday from the Federal Prison in Curitiba, Brazil, former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva commented on the behaviour of right-wing governments and recommended to the United States President Donald Trump that he takes care of his own country and leave Venezuela in peace.
“The treatment they are giving to Venezuela is not right. Venezuela must have sovereignty, it must have self-determination. Venezuela is a problem of the Venezuelan people, it is not a problem of the United States. Trump should take care of the United States and stop getting where nobody calls him.”
Asked about the rise of the right, the Workers' Party leader recalled that Latin America lived an extraordinary period with high economic growth rates, income distribution and social inclusion between 2000 and 2014, with the election of Nestor Kirchner and Cristina Fernandez in Argentina, Ricardo Lagos in Chile, Lula da Silva in Brazil, Evo Morales in Bolivia, Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and Rafael Correa in Ecuador.
At this moment, however, the right is governing but without achieving important development results: "Now you are living a moment of the extreme right, which is failing in an absurd way," the former Brazilian president said and added that "in times of terror, we chose monsters to protect us."
He also pointed out that “when you create hatred in society, anti-politics takes away the hope of anyone... it takes away hope in existing institutions, which means that everything is fair game.”
The current failure of right-wing rulers, Lula warned, is opening the way to even more extremist leaders.
"Neoliberalism, in the form in which it arose at the globalization era, is losing its place... [but] it is losing in favor of the right, just as it lost in favor of Hitler or Mussolini... even in Germany, Angela Merkel, who is a very strong politician, would not rule Germany if it were not due to agreements with the Social Democratic Party (SPD)."
According to the former Brazilian President, Trump's rise reflects that political dynamic in which the right conquers power by fabricating lies.
"U.S. citizens did not believe Trump had the slightst chance. And why did he eventually win the elections? It was not because of [Vladimir] Putin, as they try to claim. It was because of lies and fake news, as it happened here in Brazil too."
Lula also recalled that easy, although unfeasible, promises were part of Trump's electoral strategy.
"'America for Americans', 'jobs for Americans.' His election was due to the fact that he had a correct speech for white workers... who were running out of jobs," Lula said and argued that Trump "promised the obvious: employment for the American people. He promised to fight with the Chinese for the American people and generate employment. That made him win the election."
Regarding what is happening in Brazil, Lula indicated that former captain Jair Bolsonaro will likely run into more trouble during his term in office if he keeps his current attitudes.
"When I was elected as president, there was a 513 member parliament in which I had 80 congressmen. Bolsonaro has 50 . He will need a lot more than I did to build a [favorable] force correlation. It's no use saying 'the old politics', for he is ‘the old politics’.”

OUTRAGIOUS: Saudi Arabia to Execute 3 Dissident Scholars after Ramadan - NO MORE DEALS WITH HOUSE OF SAUD!
Saudi Arabia has already executed dozens of people this year, including 37 last month.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is preparing to execute three dissident scholars on charges of 'terrorism', the Middle East Eye reported this week.
The MEE report cited two government sources and one male relative of the accused. They identified the three individuals as Sheikh Salman al-Awdah, Awad al-Qarni and Ali al-Omari.
According to the report, the three scholars will be executed by the Saudi authorities after the holy month of Ramadan.
The Saudi authorities have not issued a statement regarding these claims.
Al-Awdah is an internationally renowned progressive Islamic scholar described by UN experts as a "reformist", al-Qarni is a preacher, academic and author, and al-Omari is a popular broadcaster.
"They will not wait to execute these men once the death sentence has been passed," one unnamed source told Middle East Eye.
Saudi Arabia has already executed dozens of people this year, including 37 last month. These executions caused an international outcry from several human rights groups as the Saudi authorities put to death several democracy advocates.
International Human Rights organizations have called for a total blockade of the House of Saud, its so-called governance of Saudi Arabia and all the individuals involved. Saudi women have engaged in a campaign: "NO PEACE - NO PUSSY!" and refuse to be touched by husbands or lovers, if their hands are bloodstained.

116 to 6 vote at the UN that UK must decolonise the Chagos Islands immediately. See the UK's moral standing - its 5 allies in the entire world were Trump's USA, self-confessed Apartheid-state Israel, climate-change denying Australia, fascist run Hungary and the corrupt Maldives. The 193 United Nations member states on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to demand the UK hand over control of the Chagos islands to Mauritius "as soon as possible".
A total of 116 countries voted in favour of a non-binding resolution presented by African countries that urged Britain to "withdraw its colonial administration" from the Chagos Islands within six months. USA-vassals Germany, Canada and France were among the 56 other nations that abstained apart from those absent.
The Brits, however, maintained their stiff upper lip and Britain insists it has sovereignty over the archipelago, which it calls the British Indian Ocean Territory, despite the fact that already in February, the International Court of Justice handed Mauritius a victory when it said in a legal opinion that Britain had illegally split the islands and should give up control of the Chagos. After Britain rejected that ruling, Mauritius turned to the UN General Assembly to press for action.
Britain evicted about 2,000 people from the archipelago in the 1960s and '70s to make way for a huge US military base on Diego Garcia, which played a key strategic role in the Cold War before being used as a staging ground for US bombing campaigns against Afghanistan and Iraq in the 2000s. The facility was used as a CIA interrogation centre after the September 11, 2001 attacks. In 2016, Britain renewed a lease agreement with the US for the use of Diego Garcia until 2036.
But it has to end now and the evicted Chagossians must take their homeland back - NOW!
Update TUE 21. May 2019 (vf): Maduro says "traitors" among armed forces should be detained
Venezuela's armed forces should always remain ready to counter possible threats and maintain unity in their ranks, President Nicolas Maduro said on Tuesday.
"I tell everyone in the armed forces that they need to have high morals and discipline," Maduro was quoted by Union Radio as saying. "They should always be ready to defend the right for peace. If someone is revealed to be a traitor, he needs to be detained right away," he added.
On April 30 a group of military representatives supported opposition leader Juan Guaido. This development was followed by massive anti-government protests in the country. Five people died and hundreds were injured in clashed with security forces. Non-governmental organizations reported that nearly 340 protesters were detained.

Maduro Vows to Devote His ‘Whole Life’ to People of Venezuela
Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets to celebrate one year of Maduro’s most recent presidential term. In a speech to supporters, the president called for dialogue, but warned of a firm response to threats.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that he intends to devote his entire life to serving the Venezuelan people, adding that "heaven" protected him last year so that he can do that.
"Do you remember how on August 4 last year they tried to kill me with a drone with explosives? Who defended me? Heaven, our God. He allowed me to live for something, and I know why — in order to devote my whole life to the happiness of our people, to the prosperity of our country," Maduro, whose speech to supporters was broadcast on Twitter, said.
On 4 August 2018, Maduro was attacked with several drones rigged with explosives. One drone exploded over the street as Maduro was giving a speech to National Guard members in commemoration of the Guard's 81st anniversary. According to Venezuela's Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez, several Guard members were wounded. The president, covered by his bodyguards with ballistic shields, was left unharmed.

Venezuela has the Means to Defeat the US Blockade The Venezuelan Ambassador to
#Russia said that despite the ongoing blockade by the #UnitedStates, his country has found ways to defeat them and continue to advance his nation's economic development. #HandsOffVenezuela
The Venezuelan Ambassador to Russia, Carlos Rafael Faría Tortosa, said Tuesday that despite the ongoing blockade by the United States, his country has found ways to defeat them and continue to advance his nation's economic development.
In an interview with the Russian agency RT, Tortosa said that "when our president announced that the gold production in the country has been recovering, the U.S. government immediately banned any commercial relationship with our mining companies. We, of course, have already found ways to circumvent these sanctions."
Tortosa indicated that "we will act in the same way in relation to other measures that are being taken against our country."
According to the ambassador, Venezuela's total losses as a result of these sanctions imposed by the U.S. has been around US$130 billion.
"As a result of the economic blockade imposed by the United States, the losses are estimated at US$130 billion dollars for the period between 2015 to 2018," he explained, adding that with these funds, Venezuela could have flourished for nine years.
The representative of the South American country in Russia said that despite the violent actions by sectors of the Venezuelan right, President Nicolás Maduro has insisted on the path of dialogue to peacefully resolve the situation and political differences among Venezuelans.
The diplomat explained that around 40 financial institutions in 17 countries have frozen US$5.47 billion from Venezuela. According to Tortosa, his government is fighting to free these funds and wants to inform the whole world about their financial situation.
Tortosa reiterated that Washington's main objective is "to overthrow the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro", and change the political course established by commander Hugo Chávez.
Finally, the ambassador denied the presence of Russian forces in Venezuela, adding that Moscow has expressed its position "to show that the issues can not be resolved with intervention, threats, and blackmail."

RESOLVED, that the CTU advocate for the suspension of the current sanctions against Venezuela, and for the U.S. to cease all threats, military mobilization, and interference in the economic and internal politics and affairs of the Venezuelan people; and respect the right of self-determination of this sovereign nation in accordance with U.S. stated commitment to the rule of law.
After the whole world, apart from the USA, Saudi Arabia and Israel - has told Trump and his warhawks to back off from any plan to create any new conflict in the Middle East - targeting Iran or others - and warned him and his American people clearly that such would not be tolerated or supported, the military-inustrial Kraken holding Trump and the USA in their grip demands another military Theater elsewhere which would require the enless supply of weapons and other military technology as well as young people's lives. Therefore Venezuela is not off the table or off the hook, because the monster demands to be fed, and Venezuelans need to be eternally vigilant.

The US' progress on this:

The U.S. soft coup on Ethiopia was only the shift from one puppet to another - a more modern smartass one. But in Venezuela the USA would get another bloody nose like in Vietnam.
And yet we're told we live in a 'rules-based international order' - are we really?
‘Stalled Out With Guaido’: Pence Fails to Provide Specifics on Venezuela
US Vice President Mike Pence provided no details on a US plan to handle the political crisis in Venezuela during a recent press conference, as, according to observers, it becomes increasingly apparent that Washington’s strategy to oust legitimate President Nicolas Maduro has stalled.
"The US will not stand idly by watching the Venezuela situation unfold," said Pence on Monday.
Speaking at a press conference at the Shultz Center in Jacksonville, California, Pence called the situation in Venezuela a "tragedy," but declared out that it is due to Maduro's "drive by the dictatorship and socialism".
According to Pence, Maduro has "no legitimate claim to power" and "must go."
Exactly one year ago, on 20 May 2018, Maduro was elected the President of Venezuela. The opposition refused to accept the outcome.
Pence noted that US President Donald Trump has "led a coalition of 50 nations" who recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as an "interim president" of Venezuela. The US "continued to bring economic and diplomatic pressure" on Venezuela and "its patrons" in Cuba.
When asked about the possibility of a military invasion, Pence repeated a favorite mantra of the White House, saying that "all options are on the table."
"All options are on the table. The United States is not going to stand idly by while Venezuela continues to collapse into tyranny and deprivation," he said.
According to Pence, three million people left Venezuela, running away from the ongoing crisis, and it is in the best interests of the US to restore "liberty, rule of law and democracy in Venezuela."
"The American people, people around the world, people of Venezuela can be confident President Trump and our administration are going to stand firm until we see freedom restored in Venezuela," he said, without offering specifics.
The US maintains an ambiguous position regarding military intervention, despite US National Security Advisor John Bolton repeatedly claiming that "all options are on the table."
As an attending journalist noted, however, "it seems like [the US has] stalled out with Guaido." According to the journalist, if the US does not take military action against Venezuela, the alternative will be to "let the status quo maintain" as did the US "through the Chavez era."
On 30 April, Guaido attempted to stage a coup to oust President Maduro. However, his plans failed, and the Armed Forces pledged loyalty to the elected president. Maduro accused the opposition of sabotaging infrastructure in order to sow chaos and unrest across the nation, including an attack on the Guri hydroelectric dam, which plunged the nation into a massive blackout.
Earlier this year, Maduro published a video showing opposition members burning trucks carrying humanitarian aid into the crisis-torn country.
Russia and China are among those who recognize Maduro as the legitimate leader of the Latin American country.
A nuclear doomsday looms closer as the risk of atomic war is at its highest since World War Two, a senior United Nations (U.N.) arms expert said on Tuesday, calling it an “urgent” issue that the world should take more seriously.
The Director of the U.N. Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), Renata Dwan, warned that all states with nuclear weapons are pushing for weapon modernization programs, while arms control regulations are changing or fading.
This restructure of nuclear agreements is partly due to strategic competition between China and the U.S, and a new “arms race” between the North American nation and Russia. With disarmament talks stalemated for the past two decades, 122 countries have signed a treaty to ban nuclear weapons, expect states with the weaponized material.
As a result, since 2018, the Doomsday Clock marks two-minutes till midnight, something not seen since 1947. “I think that it’s genuinely a call to recognize – and this has been somewhat missing in the media coverage of the issues – that the risks of nuclear war are particularly high now,” the expert added.
The clock was created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1947, who had helped develop the first atomic weapons in the Manhattan Project. The experts used the imagery of apocalypse (midnight) and the contemporary idiom of nuclear explosion (countdown to zero) to convey threats to humanity and the planet.
To counteract, the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons so far has gathered 23 of the 50 ratifications that it needs to come into force, including South Africa, Austria, Thailand, Vietnam, and Mexico. But It is strongly opposed by the U.S., Russia, and other states with nuclear arms.
A rather worrying stance by nuclear superpowers, as the 2011 New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) treaty, the only U.S.-Russia arms control pact limiting deployed strategic nuclear weapons, expires in February 2021. While China has stated it will not participate in negotiations on any trilateral nuclear disarmament agreement with the U.S. and Russia.
Due to the fact, the U.S. has recently withdrawn from both the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM Treaty) and the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned could lead to an “arms race” with likely worse consequences than the Cold War.
The decision to move or to leave in place the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock is made every year by the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board in consultation with its Board of Sponsors, which includes 15 Nobel laureates. The fact that it is closer to midnight than ever should be a warning to all.

“Grave Mistake to Hand Over Arms to a Cheating State”: FARC Iván Márquez
Luciano Marín Arango, aka "Iván Márquez", ex-guerrilla commander of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – whose acronyms now belong to the Revolutionary Alternative Force of the Communal (FARC) – wrote on Monday in a statement posted on his Twitter that “it was a serious mistake to have handed over [our] weapons to a cheating state.”
“We trusted in the good faith of the counterpart,” Márquez wrote and pointed out that the FARC was naive to forget the words of its commander in chief, Manuel Marulanda Vélez, who warned that “weapons were the only guarantee of compliance with agreements”, referring to the peace pact between the guerrilla group and the Colombian government signed in Havana, Cuba.
Márquez reacted through a statement, published Monday in his Twitter account, after what happened with former FARC leader Seuis Paucias Hernández, known as Jesús Santrich, who had been released last Friday and recaptured minutes later.
The ex-guerrilla denounced that, in addition, Santrich was “drugged by force” to compel him to testify.
“What filth of a Prosecutor’s Office do we Colombians have, that frees, recaptures and then practices a “legalization” to detain a blind person, dopes him until it causes him to be unconscious, taking him to the verge of death”, he emphasized.

In the face of this situation, Márquez asked the Colombian president, Iván Duque, not to “turn his back on the Constitution” or “betray his oath”. In addition, he urged him not to dynamite “the independence of the powers, with that deaf hatred that only seeks to shatter and render ineffective the Havana Peace Agreement.”
“Do not tear your clothes, projecting yourself as an unpolluted president in the face of drug trafficking, because you know very well that your political boss, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, is a mafioso owner of an indelible fingerprint,” he emphasized.
What happened with Santrich
Santrich was arrested on April 9, 2018, in response to a request made by a judge in New York (USA), who ordered his capture after accusing him of sending ten tons of drugs valued at 15 million dollars to the US in 2016, that is, after the peace agreement between the FARC and the Government of Juan Manuel Santos was signed.
On May 15, the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), the transitional justice mechanism agreed between the Colombian Government and the FARC to prosecute the actors of the armed conflict, considered that the evidence presented against them was not sufficient, which requested his release and denied the request for extradition.
However, on Friday, immediately after he was released, the National Prosecutor’s Office rearrested him and returned him to the facilities of the Bogota prison of La Picota. (La IguanaTV - Translated by: EF/JRE-OT)
